- International One Meter (IOM):

This is the international class with the fastest-growing fleet in the world. The international class association estimates approximately 15,000 IOM were built, making it the largest class of radio sailing yacht. The IOM class was developed by the ISAF–RSD Permanent Committee and was adopted as an international class in 1988. The rules are very strict, limiting the total length (one meter), the draft, the keel weight, the minimum overall weight (4 Kg), and not allowing the use of exotic materials (like carbon fibber) in the construction of the hull. Rigs and sails measures and materials are also controlled. Three different sizes of one design rigs (1, 2 and 3) are allowed, and it is up to the skipper the decision of the best choice for the sailing conditions in the moment of the race. Besides, the rules limit yachts to a two channel control, the first one for the rudder and the other for the control of both sails. The strict rules allow the amateur builder to produce a competitive yacht and, at the same time, keep the construction cost to an acceptable level. Despite this, there is enough freedom in the design of the hull, the fin and the rudder. These features are not found in any other class, and are one of the reasons that make IOM a so popular class around the world.
